Handpicked anti-Trump prosecutor Jack Smith is nearing a decision on indicting Donald Trump on baseless charges.
Critics suspect Attorney General Merrick Garland picked Smith because Garland knew he could count on Smith to meddle in the election by filing an indictment against Joe Biden’s chief political rival just before the GOP primary kicks off.
A reporter confronted Biden about the possibility of pardoning Trump should Smith win a conviction – which is likely since Smith is making sure he holds any trial in D.C. where Smith can pick jurors from a pool of 95 percent Democrats – and Biden avoided giving any response.
“It’s a good question,” Biden exclaimed before ducking giving any answer.
Comments by Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis prompted this question.
Both Trump and DeSantis made ending the weaponization of the government against conservatives a pillar of their campaign.
In a CNN town hall event, Trump promised to pardon many of his supporters that the Biden administration put in jail.
Trump cited the unfair double standard of the Biden Justice Department dismissing charges against BLM and Antifa rioters as for why he would pardon January 6 defendants.
“I am inclined to pardon many of them. I can’t say for every single one because a couple of them probably they got out of control, but, you know, when you look at Antifa, what they’ve done to Portland, and if you look at Antifa, look at what they’ve done to Minneapolis and so many other – so many other places, look at what they did to Seattle. And BLM – BLM, many people were killed,” Trump declared.
DeSantis doesn’t want to give Trump any room to his right on this issue so DeSantis told radio hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton that he would consider pardons on a case-by-case basis for anyone convicted of what he deemed politically motivated charges relating to January 6.
These pardons – DeSantis contended – could even include Trump if Smith wins a conviction in a stacked deck trial.
“What I’m going to do is — I’m going to do on Day One – I will have folks that will get together and look at all these cases, who are people who are victims of weaponization or political targeting, and we will be aggressive at issuing pardons. Now, some of these cases, some people may have a technical violation of the law,” DeSantis told Travis and Sexton.
“But if there are three other people who did the same thing, but just in a context like [Black Lives Matter] and they don’t get prosecuted at all, that is uneven application of justice, and so we’re going to find ways where that did not happen. And then we will use the pardon power — and I will do that at the front end. You know, a lot of people wait until the end of the administration to issue pardons. We’re going to find examples where government’s been weaponized against disfavored groups, and we will apply relief as appropriate,” DeSantis continued.
Joe Biden trying to put Donald Trump in jail to stop him from running for president based on political charges would be the most divisive act by an American president that anyone can remember.
