A top Democrat made a ridiculous assertion about freedom in America.
But it completely backfired on him.
Ron DeSantis completely obliterated this top Democrat’s insane claim.
California is not a state where people go to be free, unless they’re looking for freedom from police enforcing the law, but that’s just what Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom claimed.
“California is the true freedom state. Protecting liberty from a rising tide of oppression taking root in statehouses. Weakness, masquerading as strength. Small men in big offices. Freedom is who we are – anyone from anywhere can accomplish anything here,” Newsom tweeted.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted Newsom during a Fox News interview Monday night for claiming that California was “the real freedom state.”
“Florida, we’re not a sanctuary state,” DeSantis said. “When I became governor, we were able to ban sanctuary cities. The rule of law is important. And so, of course, we’re not going to recognize lawless identifications that are done by California.”
“California, they have abandoned the rule of law,” he continued. “They are a sanctuary state. They don’t follow federal immigration laws. And, of course, the Soros prosecutors, they pick and choose which laws to enforce. There will be people in Los Angeles who will get mugged, Sean, on the street and the prosecutor won’t bring charges against these guys, and they end up going out and they victimize other people.”
“So, I think public safety is incredibly important,” he added. “And when you abandon the rule of law, you end up getting a lot of the results that they have had in California, and people respond by fleeing the jurisdiction.”
According to a survey done by the Cato Institute in 2021, California is one of the least-free states in America, ranking 48th out of 50.
“California is one of the least free states in the country, largely because of its long-standing poor performance on economic freedom,” the libertarian think tank concluded.
It ranked poorly because of its high taxes, burdensome regulations, and enforcement of liberal social values.
“California is a classic left-wing state on social issues. Gun rights are among the weakest in the country and have been weakened consistently over time. It was one of the first states to adopt a smoking ban on private property, which was further tightened in 2016. Cigarette taxes were hiked substantially in 2017. It has adopted strict, anti-scientific vaping bans and bans on flavored e-cigarettes (locally and under 21 statewide),” the think tank notes.
In addition California had the strictest lockdowns in the country due to Covid and Newsom himself boasted about the restrictions he imposed.
“After implementing first-in-the-nation school masking and staff vaccination measures, California becomes the first state to announce plans to require student vaccinations – adding the COVID-19 vaccine to list of vaccinations required for school, such as the vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella,” his administration announced in October of 2021.
